I hope someone can help me out. How do you exchange out canned soups? This session, the members in my group are keeping me on my toes and asking all kinds of questions. So this is one of the questions, after one of the members was ill and ate canned soups and wanted to know how to exchange them. My thoughts are that the soup would be just a calorie count, but I am not sure.

Campbells chicken soup: 60 calories per serving, 2 grams of fat, 890 mg. of Sodium (very high), 8 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of fibre, 3 grams of protein.

My best guess for exchanging it would be: 1-bread, 1-meat, 1-fat

Linda,
Someone else will be answering, surely, but I'd look at it like this:
There are 3 g protein, that would be about half a meat --and would also, closely, take up the 2 g fat because each serving of meat has 3 g fat. It is so easy to forget that the 3 g of fat comes "free" with the meat exchange and does not have to be counted separately. So we are at 26 or 27 calories. That leaves us 33 calories and the carbs. That's relatively close to 1/2 bread. So, I'd say 1/2 meat and 1/2 bread.

How do you feel about this count?

Hi Genny, Actually your count seems to make more sense. It has been a while that I have had to exchange anything, being on the program myself for almost 2 years, so this was a bit of a challenge. Thank you so much for the information and getting me back on track with my exchanges.

Blessings,

HI,

It can be hard sometimes to figure out the exchanges... in addition to the nutrition info, we need to have the ingredients- at least the first 3 or so... did this soup really have enough meat in it to be 1/2 a meat (that would be 1/2 an ounce of chicken).... remember, your carb has some protein in it too... if it doesn't have much meat in it, I would thing it was 1/2 bread (which has 8g of carb, 1.5g of protein, 40 cal) and 1/2 a fat (which has 2.5g of fat and 22.5 cal)... that would total out to 8g carb, 1.5g protein, 2.5g fat and 62.5 cal.... that's pretty close too...

If the member was sick, it's important that they eat something...sometimes when I'm sick, I'm not perfect on the Live it...

There are lots of good soups out there... you can also find some with little or no fat. I like the Healthy Choice soups- they have the exchanges on the label and some of them actually have a veggie in them!

hope this helps..
