View Full Version : Anxious for the 2007 VBS Theme

I know it is ridiculous to think about next summer when most of us haven't even made it through this one but...any rumors about Gospel Lights theme for next year or an ETA on when it will be announced? :D

I know, I hear ya. I'm hoping for something different. Race Car theme.
What type of theme are you looking for?

Not sure...with GL its always good. This year timing is perfect with the new Pirates of the Carribean movie coming out We are always pleased with their choices. We are a Lutheran Church and really should use Concordia Publishing, but you just can't beat GL!
Hmmm...a race car theme would be fun. Not sure if the girls would get into it though.

I noticed one of the kits out there this year was for racing so I'm guessing prolly won't be that theme but that's just a guess. I know we didn't do that one because too many of the girls would have been kind of left out. My son however nearly begged for that one, lol.

What about SonSpace? An outer space theme could be fun...and I can already think of all kinds of decoration ideas!

A few years back - actually it was my first year as director, so it would have been in 2000 - Standard Publishing did Road Rally. My first reaction was, "So what will the girls do?", but I needn't have worried. Everyone had a great time with the theme - running the race for Jesus!
My predecessor had already ordered the starter kit, so I went with the theme, not wanting to make too many changes during that time of transition when I took over the job. I was also not aware of other publishers, and I didn't have a lot of time to investigate as I acclimated from teacher to director. Standard was also the publisher that had been used since 1988 when our parish began its VBS program, so I felt, "Who was I to change it?" That was until it occured to me, "Hey, I'm the director!"
Standard used to supply craft kits for their prescribed crafts, but when they dispensed with that a few years ago, I started shopping around.
I saw, too, that another provider has a race car theme - fitting for this year with the Pixar movie, "Cars", out this summer. Not being NASCAR followers, my husband and I didn't find "Cars" all that compelling at first when the previews for it came out, as we have been for previous Pixar movies, but our three yr old son expressed interest, and we just came home from seeing it tonight. We were both pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed the film, despite our lack of interest in racing. It was a fun movie! So, I will no longer immediately dismiss a theme that seems to cater to one gender - it all depends on how it is presented.
I also recall seeing a space theme offered by a publisher, but I don't remember if that was last year or for this year.
I, too, am curious about next year's theme, even though I'm in the thick of preparing for this year. It's never to early to think about the next VBS!

You all DO know that GL already has the theme set for at least the next two year's, right? It's just a matter of waiting for them to reveal it....

I would like to know the theme for next year as well so that I can decide what decorations it would be worth it to save...We put in a lot of hours drawing and painting this year...would be nice if we could use some of it again. A lot of the trees could easily be used again as long as the them takes place on earth. I mean, there could be trees anywhere and everywhere, right? (At a racetrack, next to a dinosaur, at a clubhouse, etc., etc.)

Only a few more weeks until they anounce it!!! Usually mid July, right?
A racing theme would be cool, I am surprised there weren't more w/ "Cars" out this year.
Let see what have the past themes been?

Prior to that we had Sonzone (science lab) and Soncastle Faire (Medieval castle theme). The castle theme was probably my favourite. The entire church was decorated as a castle and all the leaders were dressed in period costume. On the first day I realised I had forgotten the pins for the name tags. You should have seen the looks I got as I ran through the supermarket in my medieval costume with garlands of flowers in my hair! ;)

I agree with Alison - SonCastle was the best, although SonCreek was a close second. I think the music for both of those was some of the best also. However, each year is great - I can't wait for all the details for 2007. My VBS is over, so I'm really, really ready to start looking ahead to next year!

Thanks, Sheryl, for announcing when you will announce next year's theme! I agree that it is helpful to know in advance what the next theme is so that decorating and craft materials can be reused. As I've said, it's never too early to plan VBS!
Now, I just need to keep my pastor from "helping" me "clean up" after VBS! Our VBS is in the mornings, so each day when we're finished, I take my pre-schooler home for lunch and a nap - and if I was wise, a nap for me, as well. When my husband comes home from work in the evening, I head back to church to set up for the next day. After our final day last year, I came back to the church hall to start cleaning up and taking down decorations. Father came in to see who had the lights on and proudly exclaimed how he came in that afternoon "to clean and take out the trash" for me!!! (He's a neat freak and notorious for tossing out stuff he shouldn't!!) Aaaargh! I'm certain that he tossed stuff I would have kept! I do appreciate his efforts, but I'd rather take care of it myself. When I'm done by Saturday noontime, there is no indication that 200+ students and volunteers have been there all week.
Anyway, knowing what I can use again the next year is very helpful in planning what to keep and what to toss. As I'm sure you all are, I try to be as frugal as I can.
(I'm sorry I missed the castle theme, too! I would have enjoyed that one!)

Jen I just wanted to say thank you for all the things I have gotten from you this year! I always look for your post. Our church is in Lucasville Ohio its in Southern Ohio Valley. Where is Milford? I saw that your VBS isnt until July, our closing program is tonight. We have somethings you might be able to use if you like. For instance, I had my husband build a huge tikki hut snack bar that I can not figure out how I am going to store it. If I could find someone doing the same theme I would let them have it.

I hope this year they post a logo we can put on our websites. It would also be cool to have a slide to put at the end of the VBS slide show to announce next years theme (at least for those who still have VBS coming up).

Er.... This theme will have to grow on me. Everyone on this thread seems so excited, but SonForce isn't instantly grabbing me right off like last year's safari and this year's treasure island. And I don't think my music leader could pull off the music. Just my initial reaction. All may change, though, once I'm able to spend time on it in prayer after I've sailed home from SonTreasure Island. I'll keep an open heart and mind...

I agree with being able to use some stories from the Old Testament. They are stories that kids don't hear all the time and should be really cool. VBS starts Monday for me, so I can't start thinking about this already. I'll wait until Wednesday or Thursday to bring this one up to my volunteers! Don't want to stress them out too much! Am I misunderstanding this theme? Is it a space thing or a special agent thing like 007 and mission impossible? The space thing would be easy to decorate but the agent thing I dont know about because I think or Newage gadget things. Will be hard to pull off............but I say we contact OT and let them know what the theme will be (if we use it) because I had already ordered most of my things when they came out with all the treasure island things in May!

I am thinking futuristic spy theme. I am not sure what the decorating will be. I can tell you me 5 y/o is really into spys this year. My husband let the theme slip and now my son is very excited about next year. I am going to be paying more attention to what he thinks spys do.
Any of you with Pre-schoolers or Toddlers? I already have the spy songs from The Backyardigans and Lazy Town in my head. 'Shh Shh...Secret..Shh Shh Secret Agents...."
jen
July 9th, 2006, 01:59 PM
Jen, thanks alot now I have the Backyardigans stuck in my head!!!! Aren't they the cutest.
If the some of decorations will be space themed, save your beach balls and hoola hoops. We can spray paint them and add glitter which will then instantly turn them into planets!!!!! I'm sure all those pool noodles we used could be painted and glittered and could be part of a shooting star or comet....Hmmmmmmm.... oooh! after Halloween lots of black fabric with stars will be on sale. Plus, I know just like many of us used scene setters which were beach themed, they DO have a black backgroud with gold stars.
NormaVK
July 9th, 2006, 01:59 PM
Maybe I'm confused about the decorations too. The information said we are gathered in a hi-tech command center orbiting high above the earth, that's why I thought we would surely see flying saucers, etc. But we are supposed to be preparing for our missions, so that implies secret agents. Looks like we might be able to do a mixture of both ideas. I am anxious to see what GL suggests for decorations, etc. I know that all the talented people on this forum will come up with great ideas.

This year we all have different takes on SonTreasure Island, water, underwater, beach, desert island, pirates, treasure hunt, etc.
Next year we will have different takes, outer space, spy training, futuristic, etc.

I can imagine a lot of gadgets to give away. Spy Scopes or Para scopes, sun glasses, turn the treasure hunts into secret missions, use manila folders marked TOP SECRET. I have a craft to make a file folder into a suitcase (we almost used in for 2005). There are some good Spy Party links I will post later.

Our VBS 2006 is still 3 weeks away, but I wanted to add my 2 cents about 2007. A couple of years ago I went to kids camp as a counselor and the theme was similar to this. The kids evangelist had a high tech set that looked like a control center all silver with lights and stuff. He also had a TV that he called his GPS.(God's Positioning System, instead of Global) meaning that God can see us wherever we are. He had taped different scenes with kids doing right and wrong things and then showed them during the evening service. The kids absolutely loved it. Everyone dressed all like spys. It was very cool. I think with the high tech world that kids live in today that this is very right on target. Also it can span many ages from little ones to teens. Good job GL. I'm not the VBS director at my church, but I will be pushing for this one.

TrinityJen is right: There's more than one way churches could go on this. While writing the course, we knew that some churches would really take off on the agent theme and hi-tech gadgets, while others would be inspired by the space/satellite feel. But everyone will add things we never even thought of—and we can't wait to see what you do!
When creating decorating ideas, we imagined we were kid special agents and asked, what would we want on our satellite headquarters? We'd of course need a Mission Command, which would be the central nervous system of the SonForce Agency. There would be a futuristic Pizza Pod for hungry agents to hang out. We'd want a Trans Port, so we could be transported to Bible times to witness real events from the Bible. We'd need a SAT-5, the Special Agent Training center where SonForce agents train to reach Level 5.
These ideas and more can be found in the Reproducible Resources book, along with patterns, cool doorway ideas, and some simple ways to bring outer space indoors.

I shared the link to the 2007 GL VBS theme with my co-director, and we're both excited about heading into outer space with SonForce next year! After we completed this year's week of VBS, she had suggested looking at the curriculum our denomination uses for VBS, for continuity sake with our other children's materials. Well, we were really disappointed with the limited resources they'd provide, and we can't imagine not having the fantastic GL program at our church again next summer!
We usually get our starter kit in January, and I hope that I can have a part in pulling together daily newsletters for 2007 VBS if there's still a need. We had 4 directors from around the country work on them this year ... would love it if we could get a group of 4 or 5 directors to get them done next year too! Okay all, this is my first official post here. I wish I had looked into this forum before now. All this time I have been struggling to direct VBS on my own and now I have all of you and your wonderful ideas to fall back on. I can't believe SonTreasure Island ended just last week for me and already I am plotting and planning next year. I usually don't even think about it until January, but, boy am I ever glad the '007 theme is out now and I can be more than prepared for it! I can feel myself getting addicted to this theme, I know I should be commited! I have one quick question for all of you, what types of gifts do you give your volunteers for their hard work and dedication? I usually just make "Thank you" cards and give big hugs. I would like to give small theme related gifts to all of them, any thoughts?

Welcome fellow Buckeye Susan! I'm in Cincinnati!
I always have trouble w/ gifts. For 2005 we gave zebra tail pretzels. This year on Wed (the week was so crazy, I had help) I gave treasure chests w/ candy and a cute poem from the SonTreasure Island board about not getting weary. Then on Friday I gave our votive candles w/ a simple label made w/ the color parrot from the clip art disk, a little quote about a candle and a little ribbon. For the teens I had Hawaiian print shirts & board short key chains from Dollar General.
'007 who knows! But I am sure I will find the idea on these boards!

This is one I have been thinking about as well....
So far I have come up with Milky Way bars and a note saying "Thank you for helping with our out-of-this-world adventure."

What is the "newsletter" you are speaking of?
Can we get copies of this too?

VBSMOM, Diana in GA has made daily Bullitens / newsletter the last 2 years. For '007 GL will provided them now a directors CD :D
Tha original post can be found at http://www.gospellight.com/forums/showthread.php?t=235&page=3
We have the VBS daily newsletters for SonTreasure Island ready! I had help from others who visit and post to these directors' forums: "TrinityJen", Beverly from IL, and Cyndi. Without their response to my pleas and prayers for HELP, I could not have gotten these done by this week! This has been a wonderful collaborative effort.
If you have purchased the Super Starter Kit from Gospel Light, then the daily newsletters perfectly complement the material in the curriculum! The daily newsletter includes information that communicates the Bible message and events of the VBS day to parents. It also is another way to emphasize the lesson with the child as the parent shares or asks questions from the newsletter.
These newsletters are easily customized to your church's VBS. You will need to have Microsoft Word to use these files. Edit text boxes with information specific to your church, like names of the teachers, times of services, and mission project information. There's a place on the second page of the newsletter for you to enter a digital photo file! I take photos each day, upload one at the mid-point of VBS, and print the newsletters an hour before the kids go home. This way there is a photo from that very day in the newsletter! If you don't have that capability, simply delete the part for the photo and enter your own text box with additional information about your VBS.
You may access these files at the following link:
http://www.faithpcachurch.org/vbs/2006/newsletters/
Follow the instructions on the web page on saving these files to your computer.
God bless you in His plans for your church's VBS this summer!
