I am thinking of buying this 'cottage kit' and turning it into a cabin. Has anyone else looked into this? The kits is only $25 for the pattern and the rivets then you have to get your own boxes.

I have been cutting cardboard animals, trees, cardboard painted backdrops for quite a while and have not had an electric knife that can last more than a few days. Do you know of another tool that would work for this. I need something that will cut curves, at least a little bit. Thanks.

I can not say enough good things about my Black & Decker Power Scissors. They run around $20 and are sold so many places someone is bound to have them on sale.

I used two of Mr McGroovy's designs last year. We made the castle and the pirate ship. Some of the photos are even on his web site! I love the rivets. It will take a couple of days to make this. The kids will love it! If you use refrigerator boxes, it will be bigger than you might think. Our castle and pirate ship turned out to be HUGE! (also a HUGE hit!!)

We made a cabin facade out of a cardboard mattress box. You can get them from moving companies pretty cheap. Actually, we made a cabin facade out of a barn facade we used last year. Take a look at my pictures under "Our Decorations"

We used carpet roles to make our cabin. Local carpet stores will usually give the empty rolls to you for free. They are 12 feet long. We cut them in half then used them to build the cabin like you would with lincoln logs. Then we drilled holes in the corners, large enough to insert a thin pvc pipe all they way down through the carpet roles from the top of the cabin to the floor. This way we are able to take it apart and move it to use as a play house in the preschool and kindergarten rooms and also as a prop for our skits. We taped the ends closed with masking tape before painting so they would look more like logs. When painting, the more you slap in on in all directions the more it looks like wood. The roof is made from cardboard with a pvc pipe frame for shape and some corrogated red sheets of real thin card board to give it texture. When I have an opportunity I'll take a picture and post it. We intentionally left the logs with space between them so the young kids can peek out when playing inside.
