View Full Version : Pin Swap

What I remember about my camping days were the pin swaps. Maybe either as a craft, something simple enough for everyone to make 1 for each group (that would be 10 for my VBS). Then they could swap in the mornings. But I don't know how well the younger kids would 'get it'.
Maybe a play on a memory verse prize, you swap the memorized verse for a pin (a sticker on a ribbon).

Jen, I've never heard of this and I don't understand how it would work. Can you elaborate??

When I was a g-scout our troop would make a unique pin (usually felt, beads, & pom poms), then when we met up w/ other troops we could 'swap' our pin for their pin. (Like they do with Olympic pins). We would cover our hats or vests w/ the pins we collected.
I am just thinking out loud about this...I never seem to use some of my earliest ideas anyway.
Anyway - here is a link to what I was talking about http://scoutswaps.com/camping.html
BTW - This is my 995 post!

Thanks Jen, that is an interesting idea. I like the web page you referred us to, could be some ideas there for the crafts person.

I really like this idea. I'm thinking of having a different pin for each group, but giving each camper 3 of the same (1 to keep, 2 to swap). Then having a "swap shop" run by one of the teen helpers, open just before and after vbs. Encourage the kids to swap with eachother, but also earn more pins either by learning the verses or "getting caught being good" coins to be used in the swap shop. I have a feeling my teen helpers will also enjoy this. Thanks for the idea.

We decorated bucket hats the first day with self-stick foam shapes. All grades also made caterpillars.....three pom poms on a mini clothespin, stick-on eyes....and clipped it unto their hat. The older campers (4th-7th) made pins later in the week (wood rounds with I (heart gemstone) VBS, foam s'mores and two beaded w/camp charms (Oriental Trading) safety pins). The craft counselors pinned the pins unto all of the hats on Friday, so that when we gave the children all of their crafts on Friday before dismissal, the bucket hats had five pins on them. The children all wore their bucket hats to the Friday evening closing program. They campers loved them and they were adorable!
