I am wondering if the kids books are really necessary or if I can do without? What can I do to substitute?

Those are a corner we cut about three years ago. There is a set of pages of pencil-and-paper work, one for each day, in the Reproducible Resources book. We find that most of the kids prefer the games using the reproducible cards in the back of the teacher books over the papers which seem more like school work. There is enough material in the GL curriculum to easily fit two weeks of VBS. The job is to figure out what of it best suits the kids and the setting you have. Our kids generally prefer action and interaction over paperwork. I hope this helps.

In the past I have either made my own or used one others have used. Even those are left unused by the kids most of the time. This year we are making photo albums and putting 1/4 sheet puzzles in each day when needed during crafts.

This is encouraging because those books are becoming a hassle for me and my schedule. I had thought about cutting them, but I wasn't sure if that would be awful to the curriculum or not. Sounds like a change for next year!
Listen at me next year......and here I still have to finish a teapot costume, cactus,...blah...blah. :D

Oh, and I've got a gorgeous teapot complete with hat and three teacups I'd gladly give you! (although my 12-yr-old son, Capt Blackbird, has become oddly attached to it....) It really is a shame some of us compulsive VBS'ers don't live closer together!

LOL! I'm seeing a city full of backyards filled with murals, street signs made out of cardboard....oh what a sight a city filled with crazy VBS directors would be.
