Recently my brother has started a new church in Long Beach. In order to reach the community, the church gave away 150 bags of groceries and had a one day VBS in the park. Throughout the day 60 kids heard the gospel for the very first time. There were lots of balloons, a game and tons of prizes. In order for the kids to earn a prize they had to answer a Bible question. Most of the kids had never even heard of a Bible. When the Bible was held up and asked what it was, one little girl said "a dictionary!" The teacher told her that it was called the Bible and is filled with stories of how much God loves us. The little girl then responded with, "There are a lot of words in there, He must loves us a lot!"

The first Bible lesson in SonWorld lesson is on Jesus healing the blind man. The teacher held up the Bible poster while telling the lesson. It worked great! Next time we are going to attach it to a board so that it doesn't fly around as much. One idea we had was to put some dirt in a plastic lunch bag, add water then let the kids place the plastic bag over their eyes so they could feel what it would be like to have mud on their eyes (without it being messy).

So by the time the kids left the park they had groceries to fill their stomach and God's Word to fill them with hope.

Serving Him together!

Lisa,

What a wonderful outreach to the community!!! I was blessed to hear how you all were able to make a difference in the lives of the families in Long Beach. I live in Azusa, not too far from you. What a wonderful tradition to start and have kids look forward to each year.
Thanks for sharing.

Awesome Testimony. Truly illustrates how the Word is the most important aspect of VBS.

What a great idea to put mud in sandwich bags and let the kids put it over their eyes! Our first day of VBS is a Family Night and I think I will have 20 or so bags like this in a basket and let the kids come up afterwards and take turns with the bags.

Tina I am sure the kids and families are going to love that! We also found that this was a great opportunity to talk to kids about prayer. I didn't write it earlier but we had one boy that when he heard that Jesus healed the blind man's eyes blurted out "I woke up the other day with my eyes stuck together and Jesus didn't heal me!" The teacher asked the boy how his eyes where today and he said fine. It was an opportunity to show him and the other kids that Jesus still cares about them and their needs today.
