Here is my first attempt at working with Styrofoam. I wanted to create a sign similar to the one in the "Celebration Square" backdrop.
I started with 1" Foam from Lowe's that had plastic on both sides. I then printed out the lettering using full sheet labels and my photo software in poster print mode. I stuck the labels on the Styrofoam and used an X-acto knife to cut around them.
I peeled the plastic from the areas I wanted removed and sprayed it with regular spray paint. The plastic melted in the areas not covered by plastic to create a rough recessed area.
After that dried I peeled all the plastic off and created the layers by gluing the foam together. The sign is three layers thick. I sanded the edges with 80 grit sandpaper, which create a huge mess. Thankfully I was outside or my wife would have killed me.
I then sprayed everything with Krylon H2O spray-paint and painted the lettering with regular acrylic craft paint.
I put Screw in drywall anchors in the back of the faom and then put eye screws into the anchors. I put a piece of wire between the eye screws to use to hang up.

houseparent,
That looks great but I have one sugguestion. The blue part looks to much like a gun to me. Could you change it so that the kids won't think it's a gun shape? What do you think about the shape?
God Bless,
Josh:rolleyes:

You know Josh, I have to shrug my shoulders at some of your postings, but in this case I have to ask: WHAT KIND OF GUNS DO YOU SHOOT? Because it looks nothing like any gun I have ever seen, real or imagined!!!

If you don't think so that's fine. I was just saying what I was seeing. It's your VBS decorations. Have fun and enjoy them.
God Bless,

Houseparent- I saw your photo of your welcome sign earlier and didn't take time to respond. I think it looks great, you are very talented. If anything, it reminds me a little of a marque at a drive-in theater. Just a big attention getting sign. I was thinking about how blessed your VBS kids will be! You have made some great props! The goal is to help the kids have an awesome time of Bible learning and understanding of salvation by faith in Jesus. I know my goal is to also make that experience as fun and memorable as possible...with a limited amount of funds, time, energy, volunteers, etc. :)

Thank you, that is more the look I was going for. Not necessarily a Drive-in Marque, but a contemporary looking theme park marque.
I hope that when I post all my props, it is to help others glean ideas, and hopefully save them some work and frustration of going through 20 designs before it works, like I have on many occasions. I don't want to be a show off that gloats about the things I have, I truly want to help others. I am very thankful for others, because many of my ideas have come from things I have seen on this board and other VBS and Special Effects websites.
I also think VBS and learning about Jesus , His Love, Grace & Salvation should be fun. I guess that is why I drive my wife so crazy this time of the year getting ready for it. She calls me obsessive, I just call it excitement. As far as resources, I donate almost a 1/3 of our VBS budget and being frugal, I try to stretch the whole budget as far as I possibly can. I am blessed with energy, and that too drives my wife nuts. She thinks I need Ritalin.
Anyway, I hope everyone gets some use out of some of my ideas and if not, I hope somebody lets me know.

I think your sign is awesome!! It looks like when you step through, you will be in wonderland. I can never duplicate all the wonderful things you make, but I love seeing them.

I think all of your ideas are great, Houseparent! However, not to stir the pot or anything, but I think perhaps what Josh was seeing was that the bottom sort of looks like the clip of a submachine gun. (My husband is a war history buff.) Of course, it's been my experience with teaching boys and having my own that they'll make guns out of anything - sticks, pipe cleaners, marshmallows! What's important here is that you freely share your great ideas. Then I try to find someone to do them for me for my VBS! :-) I've got someone working on the simulator right now.

Although I utilized this forum last year when our church first started using Gospel Light, I've never posted to this forum until now. Houseparent, you have great ideas and have awesome creativity. Just your posts alone have helped me so much. I can't wait to get on every day and see what new ideas you have. Thank you for being a blessing to the body of Christ and to all of you who add so much to this forum.

Houseparent, Houseparent, Houseparent ... I have never thought you to be the gloating, bragging sort. Your ideas have helped people ALL OVER THE WORLD (Yes, even in that long-forgotten, Southern land way below anything else - Australia). Your ideas are printed, studied, dissected, copied and used to the Glory of God to help children learn about Jesus. I can honestly say I give thanks upon every remembrance of you. To see someone who has been given these talents by the Lord, being willing to use them in such a marvellous way is a great blessing to all of us. Thanks for all your help. Big hugs from Australia!!! :D

Oh, and I'm printing out pics of your turnstile so my husband can figure out what in the world I'm talking about. I appreciate your excitement, and would be disappointed if you didn't share all of your great ideas!
