BACK IN EGYPT
Exodus 16:3
“Oh, that we were back in Egypt,” they moaned, “and that the Lord had killed us there! For there we had plenty to eat. But now you have brought us into this wilderness to kill us with starvation.”

As Moses led the Israelites out of Egyptian bondage, the people frequently complained. They groaned because they couldn’t drink the water that was available and they turned against Moses. They moaned because they demanded food. They were not satisfied with the manna God gave them. They even said they would be better off as slaves because in Egypt they did have plenty of food and water. Though God met their needs for such, they remained a rebellious and ungrateful people. They knew God promised to take care of them but their faith grew small as their critical spirits grew large.
Are we not as disobedient and unsettled as those early people? When we aren’t dieting, we complain about being too fat, or we don’t like the way we look or we feel sorry for ourselves because of the clothes we can’t wear. We complain about feeling tired all the time and not having any energy to keep up with the family. When we attempt to lose weight, we complain about wanting food we shouldn’t have, or about having to exercise, or keeping track of what we eat each day. We complain when the weight isn’t coming off as fast as we think it should. We are seldom content with anything.
What was God’s response to the murmurings of His people? God said to Moses, “Tell them the Lord has heard your tearful complaint about all you left behind in Egypt, and He is going to give you meat. You shall eat it, not just for one day or two, or five or ten, or even twenty! For one whole month you will have meat until you vomit it from your nostrils; for you have rejected the Lord…and you have wept for Egypt.” Numbers 11:18-20. When we complain, are we not rejecting the Lord also?
He has given you a second chance to live a happy, healthy life. He blesses you with wholesome foods. He shares from the depths of His wisdom and knowledge and meets your every need. But He requires a thankful heart and an obedient attitude. A complaining spirit will hinder your progress, and cease the flow of God’s blessings.
Lord, forgive my ungrateful spirit
as Your power renews my mind.
I never realized I was blessed so much,
because I was foolishly blind!
