Daniel 1:8
“But Daniel made up his mind not to eat the food and wine given to them by the king. He asked permission to eat other things instead.”

This story of Daniel and his three friends teach a very important lesson about commitment and respect for God’s laws. These young men had the opportunity of feasting at king Nebuchadnezzar’s table. The scriptures describe the cuisine as being the finest and very rich. That meant lots of calorie loaded fare! Here is a chance for Daniel to eat the best food to his fill, but he refuses and requests a ten-day diet of vegetables and water. It was feared that such a diet would leave Daniel and his friends weak and pale. But after the ten-day trial had ended, they all looked healthier and better nourished than the other young men who had been eating the food supplied by the king.

Daniel knew in his heart that he must remain faithful to God’s dietary laws and not defile himself. God blessed Daniel’s faithfulness with good health, strength, wisdom, and gave him favor with the king. Daniel’s commitment to God was so strong he wasn’t even tempted by the king’s fattening fare and sparkling wines. He knew the right thing to do and did it! No artery-clogging, gut-busting food for him!

Let this example teach you the importance of saying “no” to foods that will defile your body by robbing it of health and vitality. Dare to be like Daniel, unwavering in your commitment, and steadfast in your faith.
