Last year we had our VBS in mid July and had to deal with the high summer heat and losing kids to family vacations.
This year we decided to do it early. It's not going to be any cooler than it was last year July and half my kids will miss half the days because of baseball. I just don't think you can win, when it comes to scheduling VBS!

Houseparent-
In my town, most churches do their VBS late like the beginning of July - end of August. I think that their needs to be VBS programs spread out throughout the summer so kids can come to maybe more that one program and hear the gospel being preached.
The plus with doing it early is that the VBS Director doesn't have to "juggle" two VBS themes.:D
God Bless,

There will always be family vacations and hot summers and playing musical chairs with worker's schedules, but VBS is ALWAYS a win-win situation because God Always makes sure that the children He wants there to hear of His love WILL BE THERE ! And we HAVE to be just excited on Friday (when some of the workers are getting tired (not me..I live on pure adrenaline that week !!..lol)..as we are on Monday because that little person may only be able to make it on Friday and we have to give our 200% !
Blessings on your VBS !
Prayers surround you ! And praying for lots of refreshing laughing moments !

We always schedule the last week in July so the soft ball games are over (unless someone goes on to tournament). We also have to dodge county fair and state fair, but it seems that we have always been lucky. And you are right, the kids that God wants to be there, will be!

My wife keeps telling me that I will get my decorating done, and all the other problems will just work themselves out. They do every year.
Come 6:00 PM tomorrow, I might even start believing here.
I hope my original comments weren't misunderstood. I wasn't saying there shouldn't be VBS, I am just frustrated that there never seems to be a good time to have it and avoid conflicts. I hate the idea that several of my kids will have to miss so much of it. I think they will be missing out on some good stuff.:(

Our VBS has been the 3rd week of July for the last 5 years. I think it was in June before that. But it conflict with a camp a lot of kids went to, it was moved. But there still always seems to be one camp or another VBS week. This year we are loosing at least 3 of our most active 5th graders due to Girl Scout Camp. There are 3 camps and you get assigned one.
Personally I would like a VBS in early June so I could have a rest for the summer. I finish VBS then have only a few weeks to be ready for Sunday School to start in September.

Remember if you try to do anything in your own power it will totally fail. The pressure is off. If you have a great VBS it is in spite of yourself. I will be praying for you and for a great beginning tonight. I'm sure God will bless your efforts. Lauridale - Crystal Springs FBC

WOW! There are so many great insights here -
Maanki right on - this is God's work.
Jen you are absolutely right, our camp used to be later in August. I found I just kept working right till the very last minute. In the end this was not fair to my 3 boys - now we have camp then family holidays. We have to remember to balance work and play. Although there is so much passion it does not feel like work to us; my boys they want some down time and need it.
One thing that has stuck with me from a youth weekend long ago is this: You work like it is all you - giving God all the credit. Isn't that what we do - we all know this is God's but we are working past 100% for Him so we are going to worry and fret that everything will perfect. God will cement our efforts in grace and the little things will be invisible.
Remember only you and God see the vision in your head so your expectations are higher than anyone else's. Give it all you've got then ride that wave of spirit and peace of mind that fall's on you as VBS begins.
God sees all you've done and it is good.

I totally agree with Winnipeg! I was a basketcase the weekend before VBS, just sure catastrophe was around the corner. But when I relaxed and realized that even if the numbers weren't as big as last year, or the decorationgs weren't as grand, it was all in God's honor and His plan. Our VBS is always the 2nd week of June and it works well for us. That's usually early enough to miss camps and family vacations. And the director has the rest of the summer to relax. But, that means we start work on it in January! Finish Christmas and fire up VBS!
