I don't know how many people would be able to do this but, I am a NASCAR FANatic We go to a race at least once a year and watch all the others on TV, this year went to Atlanta. Anyway, part of going to the race is listening to the drivers and crews so I own three different radio scanners.

I am planning to use them in my classrooms that are off by themselves. I can program them to receive one of the FRS (Family Radio Service) channels. We happen to also have a couple sets of those laying around the house, you can buy them for about $15 a set, and the kids enjoy playing with them.

Using the FRS radio, I (or somebody else) can make announcements to change centers and occasional chatter like paging nonexistent agents, asteroid warnings, etc. I may even run it through a voice changer so it can sound mechanical, like having our local robot making the announcements. We have a PA in our Family Life center that our command center, pizza pod, and Communications center will be able to hear, that I will use for the same purpose.

P.S. I suppose you could just use the FRS radios as receivers, but I found that the sound is much clearer through the receiver in the scanner.

What a great idea. My husband is a radio fanatic hopefully he can figure something out for me. If not I will use the PA systems in the sanctuary and fellowship hall at the very least. What a fun way to add to the atmosphere!

That's a great idea and you can also obtain materials from NASA on some of their missions. Being a Ham Radio operator I taped a few that were simulcast from Goddard Space Flight Center here in Maryland on their VHF repeater. See what NASA can do for you. I'm planning on replaying the actual ground to shuttle mission while the kids are in our craft center.

Did you know one of our astronauts read from Genesis during one of his missions? I have it on a cd of Christian music. It will give you goosebumps.

I looked up that cd I mentioned. It is called "CREATION The Story of Life" I replayed the astronaut part and it is the first song on the cd about 2 minutes into it. The music fades and then you have an astronaut, I'm not sure which one, saying, " this is the crew of apollo 8 and we have a message for Earth" then he begins reading, "In the beginning...." There is a website listed on the cd it is www.doxology.com Hope this helps anyone that is interested. It is very very cool but because the astronaut is preceded by music I'm not sure how you would use it. Maybe there is a way to fast forward through a song on a cd but I don't know how to do it.
