I am very excited about VBS itself and for the past 3 years it was really easy to get stuff for the theme. (which might not have been a great thing - overbuying)
This year I just can't wrap my head around the spy kids theme. Maybe after I buy the starter kit it will help a bit.
Is there anything anyone else is doing to get into the mind set for this VBS?

Hey Joleen - We're concentrating on being special agents on a mission to share God's Word. I love the discipleship lessons that on in this curriculum this year. I am making name tags (thanks to Jen, I think) for each adult and teen worker -- Special Agent in Charge, etc and the teens are wild about it! We are making robots to have around the building and they are really excited about the ideas in the decorating DVD. I think once you get the starter kit, it will be easier. I was a little worried when I first heard the theme because I don't consider myself too terribly creative, but once I got my core team together, the ideas were coming fast and furiously. Continue to pray -- and remember, it's not how you are decorated, but what you are presenting. God's Word never returns void! Your VBS is going to be GREAT!!

Joleen,
I know what you mean. The last 2 years it was easy to decorate, imagination murals, find little things to have around.
This year it took some time to grow on me. In a way I think I will have less decorating. More colored paper, more printed pictures of planets. Have you looked a the pictures on the SFK site under decorating? http://gospellightvbs.com/sonforce/
Of course reading this board should get you excited!!!!

Am I alone in LOVING this theme?
What I see is too much focus on SPACE and less of the SPECIAL AGENT part.
Think SPECIALl AGENT, not SPY (although spies are part of Friday's lesson with Joshua)
We are God's Special Agents on a mission to deliver HIS word to people. We are to do HIS will as illustrated by Moses, Esther, Daniel Jeremiah and Joshua.
We will focus on training as agents to do these things. We will "go back in time" to learn how these people did them.
The space thing is secondary.
My imagination has gone wild. I am saving all sorts of things to make into "gadgets". I haven't yet figured out what the "gadgets" will do yet, but I'll get there.
Decorating is easy. computers, flashing lights, etc. for the command center. The transport room is the Bible story center.
Like the book says, the craft area is the tech lab
The game/snack area is Special agent training/snack pod
Has this helped?

Thanks Y'all.
Right after I posted this I picked up my Family Fun Mag and turned right to a section called Be a Junior Detective. There are four great ideas.
I am getting more excited the more I read the boards and I am Really wanting to get my starter kit. One of the local book stores will have it on sale in March! So I'm waiting - on pins and needles!
Menards also had big roles of black plastic lining for free with rebate. I got four rolls and figure I can do a black light room with glow spray paint.
I think I am getting there and Cyndi is right - As long as we are presenting God's Word and ministering to the kids our VBS will be blessed.

Family Fun Mag for what month?

Sorry about that -- It was this months, March.
There are instructions to teach kids to detect things like who ate a bit of cookie by having each kid bite down on stytrofoam plate wedges and comparing the bite marks. Also shows how to figure out who wrote a note by comparing hand writing and finding foot and tire prints with contact paper and plaster of paris. I'll type out the details later if anyone is interested - as for now, I am probably not making sence because I am sick and running a fever and probably delusional.

Hey Joleen- sorry you don't feel so hot-- I just had a nasty little stomach virus myself- thankfully it was only the 24 hour version--- that was enough for anybody!!! Hope you feel better soon!
I would love to hear more about the "investigative tips" you were talking about whenever you feel like posting them-- they sound neat!
Thanks,
Lisa

We're in Germany so this theme is presenting us with quite the challenge. We are a) tiny which equals little money and b) not all the cheap little stores like we have in the states (I MISS DOLLAR TREE for VBS!)
I know the Lord will be blessed like He is every year, but these wild themes kill us overseas.
Please keep overseas churches (military) in prayer each year as we struggle to have inviting and Godly VBS programs.
Ok, done venting, now back to praying and researching!

Dawn,
What a challenge you have, and you still take the calling to run a VBS. I am sure I speak for many on this board, let us know if there is anything we can do to help.
For decorations this year I am using mostly colored paper on the walls and making cardboard robots. I hope to do some murals too w/ 'trash' cardboard from the home imp stores.
Good luck!

Hello all.
I'm new to this board. I just received a call from my Children's minister. She is dumping the VBS we had been planning on and will more than likely go with this one.
Can I tell you how excited I am now! I was so not excited with the other VBS she was planning on using. I couldn't find any ideas, I wasn't excited about decorating, registration, recruiting or anything.
My head is almost exploding with ideas now!

Dear DFS---I feel your pain not having a Dollar Tree nearby!!! I visit mine at LEAST once a week- you probably have already thought of this, but Oriental trading is always a good idea, and you can order in a flash online-- if you haven't already checked them out, I'm sure you will be pleased- most everything I found last year was from them and it saved me a bunch of money! If there is something in particular that you need to look for at Dollar Tree, you can email me at lisavanreenen@yahoo.com and I will look for you and ship it to you. Good luck and God Bless!

June 18-22. EEK! That's just 2 months away. Fortunately, this VBS looks very easy to pull off. I've got so many decorating ideas. I've already scanned the craft forum and have craft ideas.
This is going to be fun!
