Hi All,

It has been quiet around here so I thought I would start an OFF TOPIC thread.

What has everyone been up too?

I know I have been busy. I have my parents visiting from out of town so last week was all of the cleaning and this week is the visiting & more cleaning.

Yesterday I interviewed for an official version of my current Sunday School position at my church. Please pray for my discernment. I will be going from volunteer to non-paid part-time staff. The budget isn't able to support the salary they wanted so now it will be money for education and training. The new position will even oversee VBS. I know 2 other people that have applied, and would willing work with either of them. I am praying for Gods will.....

I better get going before my kids talk the grandparents into doing something they shouldn't. :o

Hi Jen ~

So what is the difference in a volunteer position and a non-paid position? And if you don't get it will there be more steps to getting VBS accomplished with someone overseeing you? YIKES!

Things are crazy here. My hubby works from home and is here most of the time until mid January then he is traveling off and on until June and if he is here he is working non-stop and I have to keep the kids quite when he's on the phone. Right now he is in CA for a week and I'm about to pull my hair out. My two year old got a hold of the eggs this morning and threw 6 against the fridge before I got to him. Maybe we need a Super Nanny thread!

I hope all goes well with your church positions! How long have you been directing VBS? You seem very well versed!

Jen,
If the people interviewing for the job know how much help you give eveyone on this forum, you would get the job for sure.
You will be in my prayers.

Hey--I agree about all the help you give here--just from that alone you should get the job plus I know how difficult it is to let someone else be in charge of something you are used to doing--I also will pray for you to get the job or at least still be able to direct VBS: remember though that there is a reason and a plan for everything!!
I'm glad you started this thread--I was just thinking about it being quiet--this board is almost a saving grace for me--it reminds me that I'm not the only crazy person thinking of VBS constantly--I was beginning to wonder again....
Anyway besides working on all the notebooks for VBS (my 1st meeting is on March 23). I have been debating whether to homeschool my hearing impaired son for 7th and 8th grade. I promised when he lost alot of his hearing that I would keep him mainstreamed--keep him "normal" but I think that he is completely lost and I fear that junior high will be a horrible experience for him. Especially since I was told by teachers that they really are only focused on discipline in junior high.:(
Anyway that's it for me.

Ana, How much hearing loss does your son have? Does he consider himself Deaf or Hearing? I spent 20 years in Deaf Ministry, so this is a situation close to my heart. Does he have access to an interpreter? Does he sign? I'll be praying for you. It's a tough decision. My first general meeting is March 18th. I'd really appreciate your prayers. I have rheumatoid and osteoarthritis and I have been so fatigued this past month. Please pray that the Lord will give me His strength to make this meeting a success. I love this theme and the materials and I want to share that love, passion and enthusiasm with my workers.

Hi Jen ~

So what is the difference in a volunteer position and a non-paid position? And if you don't get it will there be more steps to getting VBS accomplished with someone overseeing you? YIKES!

The difference is COMMITMENT. Right now I a really part of a 3 person team w/ 2 us us doing the organizing. Officially I am a co-director, but I haven't even talked to my 'co' (someone else) to see what her plans are in helping w/ VBS. She knows it is my passion and she is working more than she has in the past.

So the JOB would be an actual position overseeing ALL of Sunday School. I would have $ to use for training and possibly becoming certified in Christian Ed. I feel like this was a giant leap of faith that God asked me to take. Maybe it was a learning experience before my role changes (either greater or lesser). We will see...the hardest part will be waiting. And wishing I didn't sound like such an uncommitted idiot during the interview. I know God had BIG plans for me that 6 years ago I didn't even dream of.

I taught my first year of VBS in 2002. Followed by co-teaching Sunday School for the first time. I started co-directing in 2005. Followed my joining the Ed Team.

Ana - I will be praying for the decision you and your son have ahead of you.

odd that I started this under decorating...:o

BTW - Thanks for the support!

I have been in a dead run for the last 4 days - meetings at church, basketball games, out of town one night, traveling to some other small cities to get some errands done, etc.

I think it is very exciting about the position at the church - I sure will be thinking of you and I hope you can get it. I think you would be excellent for it since you are so good here on the board.

Good Luck,

Jules

Jen - you should just print all of these comments out and use them as a reference! : )
We are definately convienced you can do the job - I'm sure the people at your chruch know what a blessing you are too!

By the way most people at our chruch run from the responsibility of being Sunday School Superintendent. You have some very committed people there.

Jen,
When do you find out about the position? I'll be praying for you. I have been so busy with Sunday school and we are going to be doing our first family mission trip this summer - we had our first meeting on Sunday. There are 5 families who are very interested with kids ages 4 years to 13 years. I'm so excited for this trip - almost more then VBS! I also started our 3rd grade bible class on Sunday so this was a very busy week!

My husband and I are also going through the process of IVF right now. So on top of planning meetings and running sunday school I"m taking hormone shots and trying not to freak out on anyone!

Thanks again everyone. I have been told that the job description is 'my job', but officially it has to be open to all. I have to admit I was slow to apply, but strongly encouraged by the assoc pastor. 1 other applicant is a really close friend that is also on the current SS board, I know she would be a great leader. The other applicant has been at our church for 1 year and I am just getting to know her, and I like her. I am not sure if anyone else applied. I got an e-mail on another subject for SS and the assoc pastor said: "Thanks for everything and especially your time last night...you all made it pretty tough on us when it came to making any sort of decision!"

Something about the 'decision being hard' is making me dream of what I will do with my new free time.

Again it is God's will not my own.

Jen, I will be praying for you! I am sure they know just how blessed they are to having you. You give inspiration to us all!
I will also be praying for Ana and her son.
As to what I have been up to..........the answer is A LOT! Both my daugthers birthdays are this month, my oldest (Kelsey) just turned 16 and passed the permit test to drive (please pray for me!) my youngest (Ashley) just turned 13 today and we have been busy with parties, and school dances, and church.
I am a Teacher by profession so I work full time and right now with state testing things are insane. I have had an easier year this year because I transfered to a Home/Hospital Teacher postion after I got sick. I work with kids who are hurt or too ill to attend school in the schools, so I go to the homes/hospitals to teach them. This has been a true blessing for me because of my having Cancer (thyroid) in May of 05, I can relate to what these students are going through. I see God working in so many ways that before I had only heard about from others.
I have been trying to plan VBS in the middle of all this and going to school to finish my masters (required in the state of Kentucky). I should be finished after the fall.

There is certain alot to pray about for each of us.
I am also amazed at the impression we have of each other... Jen for example - your enthusiasm and dedication to VBS , your endless ideas led me to the conclusion that you must already be staff for your local church! It's that the way though when I think of the scriptures and descriptions for Deacons and Elders they are people who naturally go about filling the needs of others even without the title. It is the heart of a servant - no matter how you think the interview turned out it isn't going to be based on peoples opinions God is going to use you where He see fit.

As for me it is all volunteer time ad there certainly isn't much of it these days. March is our big fundraiser month....Kids calling

Good Morning, all,
We went through a series of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes late yesterday afternoon and last night. I read this morning of several churches that have been affected by these storms. There has been loss of life in several areas here in the southeast. Could we all stop and say a prayer for these people and pray for the churches in these areas? I feel so blessed this morning. We had a tornado touch down within about 3 1/2 miles from us, but we are fine -- just a few trees down. Please pray particularly for the people of Enterprise, Alabama. They are dealing with the loss of people from the tornado that hit their high school. I'm so grateful for a place where we can share prayer concerns. Thanks,
Cyndi

Joleen,
There's a funny story about me and my two brothers when we were little and had eggs. My mom was in the bathroom and it was around Christmas time so she was making cookies for the family. While she was in the bathroom, my brother Jacob was pelting my brother in the head with eggs. I was in the corner of the kitchen ducking out of the way saying "Throw another one Jake!" We here about 3, 4, and 5. I'm the oldest.

Jen,
Sure, I'll be praying about the job position. You SHOULD get it from all of the things that you post on these boards like everyone else has said already. I wish we had people like you in my church that would step up to volunteer to volunteer. Awesone job! God is really using you for His will.:D
Ana,
I will be praying for your son.
Cyndi,
I'll be praying for the people involved in the storms.

I picked up some stuff for my SonForce Kids VBS '007 today from my local Bookstore. I'm realizing that the fire inside me about the theme is going down. When I first saw the theme I was SO excited. Now it's just whatever. That's something you could pray for me about. Also, that I would promote SonForce Kids successful. I'm announcing SonForce Kids to my congregation a Sunday in March. (My church isn't having a VBS because of road construction all summer and finicial issues.) Finally, if you could pray for me about my relationship with Ethan. It's been a rough topic since November and I just want it worked out. That's what's been taking most of time.

Thanks TrintyJen for starting this thread. I needed it!:)

God Bless,

Hi everyone. What have I been up to? Here in Iowa we have just come through a terrible ice storm and blizzard. We were without electricity for 5 days here at home, but there are still people around me that don't have it back on yet. It was amazing how everyone in our little community looked out for one another, our pastor came around to all his flock last Sunday and gathered up all the people who didn't have some way to heat their homes or cook, and took them to his home, he had a generator. One elderly couple stayed the full 5 days, what a blessing for them. At our house, we were warmed with a fireplace in the living room and I had a gas stove to cook on, so we were inconvenienced, but surely didn't suffer. The first 3 days, my husband was gone, so I was alone, it was very dark and lonely, but I used some of that time to pray for the widows and widowers who were lonely too, and no one to look forward to returning. It was also a good time to pray for the homeless, who face the cold without heat all the time, even without shelter. It was a great time of thanksgiving for me, thanking God for all my blessings. He works all things for good to those who love Him!

Hi Everyone :)
This thread is very cool. It's so nice to touch bases and pray for each other.I will begin to write down all the prayer requests you have mentioned so that I can keep them close to my heart when I pray. You all are such a blessing .I want to give an extra big hug to you ,Josh, for writing and making me feel even more like a part of this family on here. I have been busy taking care of my family and all their needs! (my kids are in their 20's,but you're a mom forever!!)My VBS materials are on the floor of my daughters room..she moved into an apt. in October and there still isn't any furniture in there ..lol.So, that's my vbs "floor office"..lol ..I need to get busy again on it because I now have both my kids getting married this year and I am directing a vbs and helping with another one this summer out of state! I also work at a school....so..THE JOY OF THE LORD IS OUR STRENGTH!! God bless you all :)

I still haven't heard anything about the 'job'. Tonight is another Wednesday night dinner. It is so hard not to beg the committee members to tell me!

I am wondering how much info the church secretary would give me.

Then again w/o knowing things are still the same. I am planning a VBS meeting for the end of the month and I want to get it READY, just in case....I still don't know.

Josh, I would love to hear what you have planned to introduce your Backyard VBS to your church. It is such a big undertaking and a blessing for a church not having a VBS. I am sure your excitement will return once more of the plans are finalized. And of course, if there is ever less stress. It is hard to have the balance of FUN and WORK. Sometimes the WORK takes all the FUN out of it.

I just love this family! Take care all!

TrinityJen
March 11th, 2007, 10:10 AM
Whelp, I didn't get the job. The other lady currently on the committee, a true friend of mine, was offered the job. Again I just didn't seem committed to them. But she is more out going and a blessing to the ministry.

The worst part was I was told DURING SUNDAY SCHOOL! I didn't even have 1 minute to be disappointed and come to terms with it before I had to check on the kids. Then 1/2 hour choir, then 11:00 Sunday School. My jaw hurts from smiling.

But VBS will be mine! Yea! So I am not really losing anything, just not gaining responsibility! I know this is Gods will and I will have to wait to see what is next. (As if I am not busy enough w/ 2 kids)

Thanks for your prayers.

Trinity Jen,
Your VBS family loves you ! But, God loves you even more ! He sees the whole picture every angle ,inside and out, backwards ,and sideways. So that's how we know we have to TRUST HIM.
1. HE knows what's best for YOU
2. HE knows how He can use YOU to minister to His children even MORE so without that position.
There are no limitations to what God can do or where He can do things. He is after a hungry heart, a passionate heart that is seeking His face.He sees your disappointment, but He also wants you to know that He sees your heart and faithfulness and your commitment and He is going to use you and take you places you have never even imagined ! We create positions, but God has never stayed inside the "lines" when He colors !! Jen, God has big big exciting plans with you, so put your seatbelt on, coz you're going on a super-natural ride!! God bless you :)

TrinityJen,
I'm sorry to hear that but God does have a plan for you.:) The people on the Gospel Light VBS Message Board could never thank you enough for all that you do for this board and all of the ideas you come up with.
I'll have to show you what I have so far for my Park VBS. (I have things on paper but haven't typed them out yet.) I have changed it to a park format so I can reach more kids with the Gospel and the park's only a 2 minute walk from my house. I'm planning on 100 kids attending.
God Bless,

Thanks - this board is such a support. And you are all keeping me counting my blessings. I put myself in Gods hands for this path and I can't stop the ride now because of a disappointment. But it is clearer that I don't think I ever really wanted the job. My passion really is VBS and more of the supportive detail work of Sunday School.

I am hoping once my head clears, I will be ready for Gods new plan! (I ran out of my allergies meds and I guess I REALLY need them....spring :p)

As I said the job went to a friend of mine and we work really well together. I know that she is ready for this position. She has no intention of taking on VBS, other than as the wonderfully famous Craft Lady. I think the board will remove VBS from the job description. Summer Sunday School and VBS really are too much for 1 person. I am finishing organizing the lessons for April & May and I really will have a break! (You know, only working on VBS) ;)

Thanks Again!

Blessings to you all!

This is my second year to head up our VBS. We have a small, small-town church and I'm planning for 50 kids. My kids are 11 and 8. I've been reading all of the posts here and "lurking". I'm excited about his theme and have had a few cool ideas. One is that I'll be placing "spy" related items around the church for the next 4 to 6 weeks. For instance, I'm going to put a black fedora on the piano with no explanation. The next week I'll place a few magnifying glasses around the foyer and church. Then I'll tape some small "Top Secret" signs around the church. The guy who makes our newsletter is going to list the request for VBS but NOT mention the theme. And he's going to place clip-art of magnifying glasses and spies in the newsletter, also with no explanation. When the time comes to announce the VBS I plan on having one of our youth dress in a black trenchcoat and fedora, and a mag. glass in his hand walk through the church during the Announcement time, again, with no explanation. Our pastor is in on this so she'll act surprized by it also.

My purpose is to keep the church guessing and then when the premise is revealed it will all make sense.

I know, it's not a decorating idea but, oh well...

Hey--this is a great idea!!! I am a stay at home mom of 3 wonderful boys ages 10,12, and 14 (fun, fun ages!!!) I have been directing VBS at my church for 5 years. I am also a very active member of the Ministry of Mothers Sharings (MOMS) at our church--when not doing VBS I run a charity auction the 2nd half of the year and run the boys here there and everywhere--my husband and I have our own construction business here in SONny Jacksonville Fl--- I belong to the Catholic Church ( I might be the only one on these boards) I love reading ALL of these posts and feel very connected to all of you--this is a fantastic idea and I wish we could have a VBS convention so we could all meet!!!!

Hi all. A bit about myself--I am a retired RN and live on a farm in Iowa with my husband of 52 years. We have 4 children, 15 grandkids, and 7, almost 8, great grandkids. I got into children's ministry at our United Methodist church about 6 years ago. I taught Sunday School and started the VBS program again in our church, we are a very small (and elderly) congregation, but there are so many kids in the community that don't go to Sunday School anyplace, so VBS is an opportunity to reach out to them. I don't teach anymore, I have concentrated on the VBS ministry. We have about 35-40 kids in Preschool-5, and had 19 in our middle school group last year. God has surely blessed our efforts!

Josh,
We vary VBS vendors from year to year. Depends on what best suits us. We'd prefer to use the Concordia materials (did Safari Adventure 2 years back) but we really are tied to the kids being 80% of the time in the classroom and our VBS is too large to do rotation. SonForce fit the bill this year - with some modifications I imagine. We do take them outside for games and rotate skits, puppet shows and mass gatherings in the sanctuary for praise and song (Oh to get the VBS songs out of my head after VBS is over!).

About the guy thing. We REALLY actively recruit men for the 4-5 grade level and the Jr. High level. Guys just seem to be able to exert better control in those age brackets. So we have a lot of guys on teaching staff, then parking lot and security.

Anyway pray that my meeting run smoothly--and i'll let you know if I get any great ideas at the meeting

The bible story ladies decided that they were not going to set the room up as shown in the book but more like a simple desert scene and they would change the rooms stuff each day --like put the nile down the middle the first--add a throne etc the next--they also decided they would build a timeline of when the bible stories occured and how it relates to Jesus on one wall they said that the room design gave the impression that all the stories occured at the same time--it's their room and they have worked in bible story for 5 years now--I think I am way more motivated now that everyone has an idea as to what's going on--I think I was already getting bored there are some disadvantages to start planning in July!!!
By the way--I ordered the Gadget puppet--it came in today and is worth EVERY $ he is adorable!!!!!! The teens are plotting a where is Gadget game--I think they are planning on dognapping him!!!

Hi all! I am Southern California born and bred. I have been to some other parts of the country but my roots are well planted here. I am a stay at home mom with 2 girls - ages 3 1/2 and 7 1/2. I am the children's Pastor at our church (part time) and a PTA mom. I feel like I am busier now than when I was teaching full time! I do love every minute of it though.

I love Jesus yes I do --- I love Jesus how about you???!!!

Hi Angie !
It' so nice to hear from you and know alittle more about you.:)
God is teaching me alot about TRUST right now, which is the first Mission ! Has VBS ever ministered to you all like this as you are getting ready to teach the children ? It's as tho God wants us to understand and learn these truths in OUR OWN lives , so that we can really ,really teach the children, and it's coming straight from our hearts. God is just so cool like that. Not that going through some of the things we do , are easy things, but how much better we can share about God's faithfulness and love when we first have gone through something and we fully have to depend on Him !
God bless you all and have a great day !

I LOVE JESUS YES I DO..I LOVE JESUS..HOW ABOUT YOU ??!!!

I JUST WANT TO WISH EVERYONE A VERY BLESSED EASTER WITH THEIR FAMILY AND FRIENDS !! FOR GOD SO LOVED US HE GAVE HIS SON ...I AM STILL AND ALWAYS WILL BE AMAZED WITH WHAT INCREDIBLE LOVE HE HAD /HAS FOR US...... One time at a ladies conference, I cried and told Him (prayerfully in my thoughts) of how sorry I was that I haven't prayed enough or read my Bible more or witnessed enough or just spent more time with Him, and everytime, EVERYtime I thought something to add to my list..He interupted with , "BUT I LOVE YOU"..EVERYTIME, God spoke to my heart with, "BUT I LOVE YOU".I just wanted to share that with you this Easter season, just to remind you that we have never earned His love or that He loves us any less when we get too busy. He has always loved us passionately and forever and HE takes pleasure in us when we spend time with Him !! God loves being with US ! .Thankyou God for sending your Son. And Jesus, thankyou for giving your life for us.We give our life and vbs and everything we have back to you with our whole hearts.
Happy Easter Gospel Light Family :) God bless you all.

This is such an awesome group! I am trying to get caught up on all of the messages I've missed - it's been about 4 weeks since I've checked here I think.

First, Trinity Jen, I'm sorry about the job. I can imagine your hurt at the time. You still have VBS! And you still have everyone here! And you still have your God-inspired creativity which I know we're all thankful for! :)

I'm a mother of 2 boys - ages 6 & 15 - working fulltime (I'm an RN). I'm married to a physician. I attend a women's Bible study once a week and I also sit on 3 different Boards -- 1 that provides services to special-needs children & their families (my eldest has cerebral palsy), our local Hospice (a personal passion), & a Parkinson-support group (trying to do something constructive in this area for me). So I stay busy!

I did a lot of VBS planning before Christmas, took quite a break, & now I guess it's time to get back into it! Our VBS has been delayed until August (the gym that we'll have everything set up in already has a basketball tournament booked during July). I've mentioned VBS to a few people from last year, but I hope to make the big announcement to the church in a couple of weeks.

So What Happened Jen???? I've thought about you and wondered what came of all the decisions.

I've had a similar thing happen. I was nominated then voted in to be on our church board! I'm very excited, nervous, overwhelmed and scared out of my mind. I've always thought that was a job for those stuffy christian business men. There are a few on our board. I'm so scattered and ADD - I'm not sure they know what they've gotten themselves into. PRAY For ME!

OK! So maybe I should have gone past the first page. It's been a few weeks since I've been on.

Jen - Sorry to hear about the position but at least you can focus all of your energy on VBS right!

As for me, I am a stay at home mom with three boys, 2, 3 and 10 years old and a princess 11 years old. My hubby works from home too and is the idea guy for VBS. Well, usually I have the idea and he just figures out how to make it work. We are both very involved in church and our kids lives and almost too involved in each others lives. - LOL.

I grew up near Fort Worth, TX and graduated from Texas Wesleyan then met Rick and moved to Chicago - north suburbs.

WE HAVE 3 inches of snow right now and its APRIL! ARRRRG I hate that! I miss TX!

Well, that's me in a nut shell!

It's great that everyone is getting to know each other!

Karen - Wow - how do you keep everything going??? You must have a big heart and stay very well organized! I need that in my life more than ever these days.

Like now - my mother-in-law will be here in less than 24 hours and my house is a mess and I'm on the computer! I will be completely stressed out tonight around 10 trying to get everything done - WHY do I do this to myself??

Thanks for being an inspiration!

Hi Joleen, Glad you are back. I am realizing the blessing of not getting the job...God is good.

I have just returned from a 4 hour trip top see my parents at grandparents house. IT was great to see everyone. My dad decided to caravan back with us then will go on to PA to visit his father.

I am so blessed to have 3 grandparents to visit. I am really glad I took the time for this visit because I am not sure how many visits there will be. It was heavy on my heart how important it was to go for spring break.

Of course I took my laptop and was checking & posting here. Now to get ready for a 12 hour day of scrapbooking Saturday!!!! Of course I am one organizing it.
